A recent Gallup poll says only 18% of leaders are naturally good at managing others. That leaves a shocking 82% of leaders out there struggling to do it well. And the gap? It’s not about skills. It’s about self-awareness.
Tasha Eurich, a leading researcher on self-awareness, found that while most people think they’re self-aware, only about 10-12% actually are. That means most leaders are flying blind—unconsciously leading from old patterns, stress responses, and limiting beliefs.
This is where my obsession with Conscious Leadership comes in. Because if we want to lead with more impact, clarity, and purpose—we have to get radically honest about what’s going on inside first.
What is Conscious Leadership
One of my favourite definitions comes from podcast guest and consciousness expert Matt Zemon. He said:
“Conscious leadership is all about bringing as much awareness as you can to the table—an awareness of yourself, of others, and the system that you’re a part of. And then leading from that wholeness: mind, body and soul.”
I felt this deeply. Because I’ve lived both sides of the coin—the high-achiever grind and the high-performer flow. And what got me out of the first and into the second? A deep dive into conscious self-leadership.
What’s the Opposite of Conscious Leadership?
Let’s talk about the flip side: unconscious leadership. It’s when we lead from autopilot. From survival mode. From pressure over presence.
I see it all the time:
- Reactivity instead of reflection
- Micromanagement instead of trust
- Burnout instead of boundaries
- Blame instead of ownership
- Fear over alignment
I had a coaching session with an executive named Jim not long ago. He came in agitated—he’d been slammed with meetings all day, full of conflict and chaos, and hadn’t had a moment to breathe, let alone regulate. When I asked what was really going on, he snapped back, “I don’t have time to process all this stuff. I’ve got too much on my plate.”
And my response? “How’s that working for you, Jim?”
We unpacked the cost of that belief—and how it was pushing him out of alignment with his values, and into unconscious, stress-fueled leadership that was actually damaging his team.
This is why emotional intelligence is now rated the #1 leadership skill in 2025. Because awareness must come before aligned, intelligent action.
Conscious Leadership Characteristics
Conscious leadership isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence. Here are the traits I see in truly conscious leaders:
- They practice leadership self-awareness—they know their patterns, their triggers, their values.
- They lead with emotional intelligence—they can feel without flooding.
- They stay grounded in mindfulness—especially in moments of intensity.
- They live by values-based leadership—decisions come from alignment, not fear.
- They model authentic leadership—what you see is who they are.
- They’ve done the inner work—and keep doing it.
- They embody a leadership mindset shift—from striving to thriving.
It’s not about being the loudest voice in the room. It’s about being the clearest. The most grounded. The most aware.
Conscious Leadership Example
Let’s go back to Jim. Once we slowed down and got underneath his surface frustration, he realized something powerful: he was leading from adrenaline, not alignment. And that was costing him trust, peace of mind, and effectiveness.
So we practiced the pause. Got him back in his body. Helped him reorient to his values. And from that space—he could make clear, empowered decisions that served his team, not just his to-do list.
That’s the shift. That’s the power of Conscious Leadership in real-time.
Conscious Leadership Benefits
When leaders commit to conscious leadership, everything changes:
- They build stronger trust—with themselves and their teams
- They model regulated, grounded energy in high-pressure moments
- They create space for innovation and authenticity
- They lead from purpose, not pressure
- They build cultures rooted in psychological safety, not performance anxiety
High-performers don’t just need better habits. They need better awareness. This is how we stop chasing success and start embodying it.
How to Be a Conscious Leader
You don’t have to wait for a breakdown to break through. Here’s where to start:
- Do the inner work—get curious about what drives you. Reflect. Journal. Work with a coach.
- Train your awareness—pause. Breathe. Learn to notice before reacting.
- Identify your values—and make decisions that honour them.
- Practice mindfulness—even just 60 seconds of presence can reset your nervous system.
- Lead yourself first—because how you lead you, is how you lead others.
Like I always say: your presence is where your power lives. And when you lead from that place? You become magnetic. Trustworthy. Unshakable.
The best part? Your consciousness can be trained.
That’s why I call my life’s work brain training—because when you learn how to lead from within, you can change everything on the outside.
Let’s normalize slowing down so we can speed up. Let’s lead from the inside out. Let’s raise the bar on what’s possible.
Your highest potential is waiting. Conscious Leadership is how you unlock it.
