Some people think trust is built purely upon expertise, title, or formal training. While expertise may create a base-level of trust, the highest performing teams build trust through vulnerability.

Vulnerability in the work context doesn’t necessarily mean sharing your deepest, darkest secrets with your colleagues. It means showing up authentically and expressing your true opinion, with no guarantee of outcome. It can be built by simply admitting to making a mistake, giving praise to a colleague for great work, or being open to sharing critical information.

Too often, workplaces are filled with fear & ego. At the workplace, people are often afraid to take responsibility for their actions, speak up with their honest opinion, make mistakes, admit they don’t know everything while they try to push each other down to increase their authority.

Cultures like these lack psychological safety. And these workplaces don’t thrive because the people within them suffer.

There’s a better way. It starts with vulnerability. It starts with empathy. It starts with each and every one of us stepping up as leaders and choosing to make the world a better place, a safer place to be seen, authentically, even at work.

Check out this week’s The Leadership Launchpad Project podcast with the CEO of Dentsu Quebec, Genevieve Guay, where we discuss Inclusion, Empathy & Radical Honesty. This is a powerful message that proves authentic, empowered, vulnerable leadership practices are the best way to build High-Performing teams and a High-Performance business.

If you have any leadership, management, team performance, or mindset questions that you’d like to ask me or my colleague Rob Kalwarowsky, leave us a review on Apple, but the question in the review and we’ll answer it on the show.

We believe that we have a chance in all this disruption to change the way the game of life and business is being played forever and we need your help on our mission to do so, so please, share this podcast with anyone you know of who can help us spread the powerful, positive ripple effect.
