Some people think trust is built purely upon expertise, title, or formal training. While expertise may create a base-level of trust, the highest performing teams build trust through vulnerability.

Vulnerability in the work context doesn’t necessarily mean sharing your deepest, darkest secrets with your colleagues. It means showing up authentically and expressing your true opinion, with no guarantee of outcome. It can be built by simply admitting to making a mistake, giving praise to a colleague for great work, or being open to sharing critical information. 

Too often, workplaces are filled with fear & ego. At the workplace, people are often afraid to take responsibility for their actions, speak up with their honest opinion, make mistakes, admit they don’t know everything while they try to push each other down to increase their authority. 

Cultures like these lack psychological safety. And these workplaces don’t thrive because the people within them suffer.

There’s a better way. It starts with vulnerability. It starts with empathy. It starts with each and every one of us stepping up as leaders and choosing to make the world a better place, a safer place to be seen, authentically, even at work.
