The word risk has a lot of meaning behind it. Some people see risks as something to be avoided at all costs. Some people see risks as something that goes hand in hand with simply stepping out of your comfort zone.
The word risk has been manipulated over time to have a negative connotation, so it only makes sense that people would want to avoid it. But a lot of the work that we do with clients surrounds reducing the barriers to taking risks because if you never take a risk and step out of your comfort zone, then you’re never going to grow.
If ‘risk’ brings up a lot of negative feelings and scary images for you, it’s time to do some work on the belief systems causing those feelings. For example, are you afraid of risk because you’re afraid of being labeled a “failure”? Are you afraid of risk because the last time you took a risk the end result was the exact opposite of what you wanted?
As high performers, we have to do the work behind the scenes to get our thought processes and strategies to support our growth and our journey to our goals so that when we see a risk ahead, we look forward to the opportunity to try something new and step out of our comfort zone.
