As a Performance Coach, I work with a lot of clients who initially come through my door looking to increase their professional performances.  Whether that be making more money, growing their business or even career transitioning so that they can reach greater heights, I always start off by sharing what I believe to be the key to unlocking a successful career path.

You see, I am fascinated by what makes people “successful” in life and in business.  It all started when I landed on the Princeton campus my freshman year.  I took one look around, surrounded by the most successful students on the planet, and I asked myself “What do these people know that the ordinary student does not?”

This fascination only grew as I emerged into the “real world” and encountered a stark contrast between the haves and have-nots.  I started to read autobiographies on the most successful people on the planet, looking for the common thread: What do these successful people know that the average person does not?
What I found was not rocket science but it sure does shed a lot of light on the subject.  The most successful entrepreneurs, professional athletes and artists in the world all followed a very unique formula for discovering their path to great success: Combine your unique talents, skills and attributes with what you absolutely love to do or are passionate about and the success will follow.
In my experience, every successful person that I have encountered along the way has followed this formula in one way or another.  When you do what you’re great at you are supported with all the confidence in the world and if you enjoy doing it, there is no end to the amount of effort and energy you will put forth to accomplish your goals.  Especially when you run into obstacles and need that extra motivation to overcome the many challenges that come with them.
Take a minute to think about this formula for a successful career path and see how your efforts add up.  Are you on a successful path?  Are your days filled with engaging work activities that you love and which play on your greatest strengths?  If not, perhaps it is time to hit the refresh button and explore other options.  Finding the right fit is the most important first step of many steps on the journey to discovering a successful career path.
Until next time, make every performance count!
