What do the best of the best in any sport have in common? Highly refined skillsets, great amounts of dedication and determination, and ability to persevere, vision, grit, talent… the list could go on. The most important commonality that I believe every great athlete has? Purpose.
The thing is this; if you want to get to the top of the mountain, to be the best of the best, you have to overcome A LOT of roadblocks, setbacks, and difficult situations. You also have to realize that as soon as you hit the top of one mountain… you start climbing the next.
No athlete accomplishes this journey sustainably without PURPOSE. You don’t come back from ‘failure’ time and time again, you don’t wake up for early morning training sessions, you don’t sacrifice countless things without an extremely compelling reason WHY.
The reason why athletes put in all of that hard work, get told no, and still come back for more is because of their purpose. It’s not always because they inherently enjoy what they’re doing; it’s not always fun…I can attest to that.
But the athletes who find a way to remain committed and dedicated on even the hardest days, when they’re the most tired or most sore… are the athletes who get to the peak of their mountain.
What is your why? What gets you out of bed in the morning?
If you’re not sure and you’re someone with any type of goals or aspirations, I seriously recommend getting into the Mental Gym to figure it out.
