Something about the change of seasons that reminds me to get my butt back at my desk and get back to work. What do I mean by that exactly you may be asking? Well I had a wonderful reminder this morning about just how much I had fallen behind on over the summer months. Sure, it is ok to let up off the gas pedal at work so you can enjoy the nice weather and time with friends and family a bit more in the summer months, but when something is important you also want to make sure that it doesn’t fall through the cracks completely.
That is why I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about a tool that is a MUST for driving results into actuality. It is called ‘accountability systems.’ All that this means is making sure that you have some system in place that ensures you are accountable in some way to taking the action required to drive the result you want to produce in the end. Whether that be a person or thing, having something strategically in place to track your follow through is scientifically proven to maximize your chance for success.
-Identify the result you want to produce in the end (remember to make it as specific and descriptive as possible)
-Break your end goal (the outcome) into process goals (how you plan to achieve the end goal)
-Commit a time table to when you will take action on each of the process goals (try using an online calendar that you look at everyday anyways)
-Develop a system for tracking and measuring your progress (check marks and smiley faces work wonders too)
-Enlist the help of a friend or coach to help keep you accountable (designate a time weekly when you will report back to them on your progress)
I use accountability systems for all the really important outcome goals in my life. They work wonders in both my personal and professional domains and promise they will in yours too 🙂
Until next time, make every performance count!
