So how do we set goals in a way that will optimize our performance each and every day?  This is one of the most important steps when approaching how to take your performance to the next level.  There is a saying that I love, which goes “those who fail to plan are really planning to fail.”  I whole-heartedly believe in this folks.  In fact, it is a rule I have with all of my clients: Before approaching anything, in life and in career, one MUST plan for one’s success.

In order to set the stage for success, we must develop a system for tracking and measuring our performance results.  By setting goals ahead of time for the short, medium and long-term outcome, we develop a series of metrics for success.  In other words, we can measure our progress towards achieving our performance goals.

I like to break performance goals down into the following three categories:

  • OUTCOME GOALS -the destination (WHAT you want to achieve in the end)
  • PROCESS GOALS –the route you will take (HOW you will achieve this goal)
  • FOCUS GOALS –the starting point (Where the journey will begin)

Having metrics for success is key to achieving your performance goals.  Take a look at your approach to setting goals and see if it meets these criteria.  If not, you now have a proven, effective system for tracking and measuring your performance success.

Remember, make every performance count!
